Summer Reading for Students Entering Classes 1-3
Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy good books! We encourage Lower School girls to continue to spend time reading and listening to literature and we hope that the book list will provide many helpful suggestions. In addition to the independent reading that your daughter will be enjoying over the summer months, we encourage you to take this opportunity to spend time reading to your daughter, regardless of the class she is entering.
This year’s list focuses on books published during the 2018-19 publishing year and the selection of titles include award winners, those that have been well reviewed, those that are beautifully illustrated, wonderfully written, and touch upon a multitude of topics, ideas and reading levels. And because the list is limited to recently published books, please feel free to peruse the archived lists that also contain many wonderful titles from years past.
The currency of the list means that it can inadvertently reflect some of the trends in the publishing industry. Similarly to last year, many great picture book biographies were published this year and so there is quite an extensive biography section – please enjoy many of these terrific titles.
In addition to the longer biography section, this year’s list also has two sections for chapter books: Early Chapter Books (equivalent to the Blue Dot books in the LS Library) are those books that have larger font, shorter chapters, and tend to be heavily illustrated, and Chapter Books which are longer, more sophisticated and geared toward older readers in terms of vocabulary and/or content. Please be mindful of this as you review the list with your daughter.
For the Girls
If you are entering Class One: Please be sure to read or be read to on a regular basis throughout the summer. We want to know which books were your favorites. You can share the titles with me when we have Library at the beginning of the school year.
If you are entering Class Two: Be sure to read “just right” books on a regular basis throughout the summer. We want to know which books were your favorites. You can share the titles with me when we have Library at the beginning of the school year.
If you are entering Class Three: Please choose four books to read over the summer and share your thoughts about what you read with your new homeroom teacher when we return to school.
Happy Summer Reading!
